The lake is located between Huron and Ontario. The surface area of the lake is about 22,666 sq km. The lake is believed to be the shallowest among the Great lakes. The Detroit River flows into it and drains into Niagara Falls through Niagara River. The Welland canal provides navigation to the lake. From Niagara Falls it flows into Lake Ontario.

The water level in the lake depends on the seasons with the low season in January and February and the peak in June or July. The peak lake levels are in October and December. This is the historic high water level. The historic low water level is mostly during winter. History however records July 1934 to June 1935.
The islands in the lake are:
Big chicken island
Ballast island
East sister island
Green island
Hen island
Little chicken island
Gull island
Middle island
Gibraltar island e.t.c
It produces snow effect just like the rest of the Great lakes.

Strangely enough this was one of the best guarded secret among the Florida day trippers once upon a time. Today the island is one of the favorites of local, regional as well as the international visitors. Right from the honeymooners to the Hollywood film makers and travelers from all over the world come to “An Island in the Sun”.

One of the trips for you is viewing the sunrise on Tampa Bay and the picture-perfect Florida sunset on the Gulf of Mexico from the island itself is a memorable experience. No lines are there on Anna Maria Island unlike other cities in Florida with theme parks. While long pristine beaches, exotic restaurants and specialty shops greets the visitors on travel, for accommodation there are villa, resorts, and cottages. One gets everything he or she desires on any of three cities on the island.
