Gondola, Senorita?

Venice is one of the most beautiful cities in the world! It is situated in north Italy and consists of 118 small islands stretching across the Venetian Lagoon in the Adriatic Sea. The most beautiful and unique aspect of Venice is its 150 canals. The islands are connected by about 400 bridges. It is only in this city that canals serve as roads and transport from one place to another is either by canal or by foot (over the bridge!). Boats called “gondolas” ply as public transport although these are now replaced by modern mortised waterbuses. Gondolas are still available, however, for tourists and for special occasions.

Some of the main tourist attractions are:

• Piazza San Marco or Saint Mark’s Square, Venice’s public square.
• In Saint Mark’s Square you will find St. Mark’s Cathedral, the Doge’s Palace, the Campanile and many museums.
• St. Mark’s Basilica which houses St. Mark tomb. Legend goes that Venetian merchants smuggled St. Mark’s body out of Egypt in the 9th century and brought it to Venice to be buried here.

Many other sites which offer rich historical value add an exotic ambience to this uniquely quaint city.
