The Georgia Department of Natural Resources chose Gray’s reef as an America’s Sanctuary because of its refuge rank in the year 1978. It was declared National by President Jimmy Carter who was the president by then in 1981. The name Gray originates from Milton “Sam” Gray who was a great biological scholar in the region in the 1960s. The reef is very large and is located next to the shore away from the cost of Georgia. The reef is rocky with sands in between. These serve as a home to invertebrates, sponges and others include:
Barnacles
Sea fans
Hard corals
Sea stars
Crabs
Lobsters
Snails
Shrubs and shrimps.
The lake is easily and best accessible by driving. The perfect driving duration is from May to October. Logger heads, sea turtles, angel fish and coral fish also live here. The reef is visible between 15 to 45 feet. Responsible driving is however recommended by the refugee staff in order to protect it. Visitors are not allowed to destruct invertebrates or destroy the reef in any way.
